Back to the roots, aber doch nicht so ganz… Conor Oberst, Kopf/Mastermind der Bright Eyes, junger Bob Dylan oder der nächste Kurt Cobain – nie lies er sich in seiner Karriere in eine Schublade stecken. Nach dem etwas überladenen Cassadaga der Bright Eyes konzentriert er sich wieder auf einfache Folkmelodien, die einem so schnell nicht aus dem Kopf gehen. Wie früher? Nicht ganz. Das Ausrasten, das Brechen der Stimme und Struktur, das Lo-Fi. Scheinbar hat er sich davon endgültig verabschiedet.
So scharrt Conor Oberst diesmal seine Mystic Valley Band um sich und begibt sich nach Mexiko. Das Ergebnis sind 12 Lieder, die nicht so spektakulär wie seine früheren Alben sind, aber trotzdem einen unwiderstehlichen Charme haben und zum entspannen einladen. Unspektakulärer US-Folk im positivsten Sinne. Wer Bright Eyes kennt, weiß was einem erwartet.
Gone gone from New York City gibt uns gegen Ende endlich Gewissheit dies ist ein Konzeptalbum. Conor ist mit dieser Platte im Urlaub, im Urlaub von den Bright Eyes. There is nothing that the road cannot heal singt er ebenso in Moab. Er reist dabei u.a. durch Florida (der großartige Einstieg mit Cape Canaveral) und Kalifornien (Sausalito) und trift junge Menschen und deren Schicksale, wie den totkranken Danny Callahan (Even Western medicine it couldn’t save Danny Callahan, Bad bone marrow, a bald little boy). Er beobachtet am Strand Briefträger, die sich von Ihrer Arbeit eine Auszeit gönnen, obwohl Genesungswünsche noch ausgeliefert werden müssen… Die vielen kleinen Geschichten, machen die Lyrics absolut lesenswert.
Man merkt ihm an, dass das Album Spaß gemacht hat. Die Promofotos und Videoclips sind dementsprechend witzig und herrlich unverkopft. Auf dem Cover entspannt er in einer Hängematte.
Ist das Album ein Zwischenschnaufen die Auszeit vorm nächsten Meilenstein des Folks. So rastlos wie Conor Oberst ist, werden wir es schon bald wissen.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
