Den Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung seiner ersten Solo-EP Heart Burns hat sich Against Me!-Frontmann Tom Gabel gut überlegt. Kurz vor den Wahlen des Präsidenten der Vereingten Staaten von Amerika sollte sie erscheinen. Alles andere erschien ihm im Vergleich dazu vorerst peripher. “Cowards sing at Night” bildet bezeichnender Weise das inhaltliche Herz der Platte. Die Textzeilen Come back home Johnny. Come Back Home from Vietnam. Your War is over bedürfen wohl keiner weiteren Erläuterung.
So bedeutungsschwanger geht es nicht über die gesamte Lauflänge von Heart Burns zu. “Conceptual Paths” überrascht mit schleppend-scheppernden Drums und Beats, wirkt jedoch im Gesamtkontext ein wenig trivial. “Random Hearts” und “Amputations” (hier arbeitet Alkaline-Trio-Sänger Matt Skiba mit) klingen zudem zwar nach bester Against Me!-Tradition (kein allzu großes Wunder, denn Against Me! bestand zu Beginn allein aus Tom Gabel, bevor sich dieser auf die heutige Stammformation einließ), sind aber irgendwie gefühlt ebenso schnell wieder Geschichte wie sie begonnen haben.
Während allen Songs mindestens ein protestartiger Unterton anhaftet (hier geht es durch die Bank um mehr oder weniger politische Themen), zeigen das herrlich augenzwinkernde “Anna is a stool Pigeon” und “100 Years of War” vor allem auf, wo Tom Gabels eigentliche Wurzeln und Stärken liegen. In guter alter Singer-Songwriter-Manier begleitet er sich selbst auf der akkustischen Gitarre. Die Geschichte von “Anna” hat seinem nicht minder prominenten Kumpel Chuck Ragan von “Hot Water Music” so gut gefallen, dass er Tom ebenfalls mit seinen Background Vocals unterstützte.
Und soviel ist klar: Der talentierte Mr. Gabel aus Gainsville (Florida) läßt allein durch seine Stimme das Herz des treuen Against-Me!-Fans höher schlagen. Durch seine immerzu ambitionierten Texte und die sympathisch-schnoddrige Art, sie zu transportieren, erweckt er zumindest das Interesse einer aufgeschlossenen Hörerschaft. Mal sehen, was nun noch kommt: Das nächste (offizielle) Against-Me!-Album noch ein bißchen weiter in Richtung Pop? Oder direkt der vollständige Solo-Longplayer back to the roots? Wir jedenfalls haben nur ein Anliegen, lieber Tom: Hör nie auf, Dich so schön zu beschweren, wie bisher.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
