In der Kategorie merkwürdigstes Cover haben Dinosaur Jr. schon einmal eine gute Chance auf den Titel 2009. Ent-artige Wesen, retten auf eben jenem die Menschheit aus dem Smog, der aus industriellen Schornsteinen emporsteigt. Schon ein wenig strange.
In der Kategorie grobe Schnitzer in der Vermarktung sieht es auch nicht schlecht aus. Direkt nach dem Release von Farm haben Dinosaur Jr zur CD Umtauschaktion aufgerufen. Die für Deutschland gepressten CDs hatten einen “technischen Fehler” und waren total übersteuert.
Zum Glück dauerte der ganze Ärger bei mir 3 Tage, und ich konnte mir dann endlich ein Bild von Farm machen. Ob Dinosaur Jr auch in der wichtigsten Kategorie Bestes Album des Jahres eine Chance haben? Ich nehme es vorweg. Und wie.
Die Energie und Spielfreude, die dieses Spätwerk versprüht ist erstaunlich. Zumal Beyond zwar net war, aber der Funken noch nicht so recht übergesprungen ist. Diesmal machen sie alles eine Spur besser. Bessere Riffs, großartigere Mid-Tempo Melodien und natürlich eine große Schippe voll Gitarren-Gegniedel (4 Minuten Soli inklusive, “I don’t wanna go there”).
Wie zu erwarten, ist die Gitarre auch immer das zentrale Element eines jeden Songs. Darum singen die Herren Mascis und Barlow ihre Songs (2 stammen von letzterem und sind auch direkt von ihm eingesungen), zwischen einem Tropfen Melancholie in “Over it” bis hin zum ganzen Fass bei “Said the people”. Der Stil aller Lieder ist schon sehr ähnlich. Positiv gesagt, die Platte klingt aus einem Guss. Die Produktion tut ihr übriges und rundet das Gesamtbild ab. Garage Sound, wie im Lehrbuch. Besonders hervorheben muss ich “Plans”. Was für eine Gesangsmelodie.
Kritikpunkte? Fehlanzeige. Endlich nach langer Zeit kann ich ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken die volle Punktzahl verteilen. Danke Dinosaur Jr.
Wer noch nicht in das Album reingehört hat, tue dies bitte unverzüglich und direkt an dieser Stelle. Bin ich eigentlich der einzige, der sich bei Farm an das großartige White Light, White Heat, White Trash von Social Distortion erinnert fühlt?
