Danko Jones noch immer auf der Suche nach dem Back in Black des neuen Jahrtausends. Eine deutliche Kurskorrektur gegenüber dem letzten Album führt wieder auf den richtigen Weg.
Bereits bei den ersten Tönen von I think bad thoughts ist es klar. Danko Jones ist wieder zurück. Vielen Fans war das letzte Album “Never too loud” zu einfalllos und zu poppig. Erst recht die Single “Take Me Home” sorgte für lange Gesichter. Diese Zeiten sind unmissverständlich wieder vorbei. Es geht direkt ordentlich nach vorne. Danko hat seine Eier zurück. Dass dabei an einigen Stellen statt roher Gewalt nun doch eher melodisch gesungen wird, soll an dieser Stelle nicht als Altersschwäche ausgelesen, sondern vielmehr dem verbesserten Songwriting zugeordnet werden. Verbessert jedenfalls soweit dies im Danko Jones Kosmos möglich ist.
Nach wie vor geht es hier um simplen Powerrock, mal etwas rockiger, mal etwas mehr Power. Aber alles immer mit einem Gespür für Melodien. Schluss aus. Experimente (zum Glück) wieder abgeschaltet. Und damit brescht Danko Jones stärker denn je in Richtung AC/DC, Motörhead und Konsorten. Bands die Alben primär aufnehmen, um ein paar neue Lieder für die Tour zu haben. Es ist erstaunlich, dass die Band bereits mit Album Nr. 6 (in 9 Jahren – seit dem Debüt I’m Alive And On Fire) diesen Status scheinbar erreicht hat.
“Below the belt” ist eher kurzweilig geraten, macht dabei in der geringen Halbwertzeit gehörig Spaß. Gerade die Lieder Had Enough und Apology accepted sind erstklassige Lieder und empfehlen sich für einen Platz in der ewigen Setlist. Tonight is fine ist einer der harten Mid-Tempo Riffrocker zum gepflegten Kopfnicken.
Textlich hören wir nichts Neues. Der unersättliche Macho und die leichte Frau, alle Geschichten maßlos übertrieben und mit einem Augenzwinkern unterlegt. “Screw your girl in the back of your cadalliac”. Einige Zoten sind diesmal jedoch ein wenig platter als sonst geraten. Active vulcanoes oder Magic snake hören sich nicht nur im Songtitel plump an.”it´s friday night but your magic snake don´t want to play outside” Naja, Herr Jones, da kommen wir schon so langsam in Fremdschäm Gefilde. Wenigstens ist letzteres Lied musikalisch gelungen.
Auch wenn Danko Jones noch ein paar Meilen von einem Rockmeilenstein entfernt sind, haben sie hier ein recht gelungenes Album hingelegt, welches wieder Spaß auf ein Konzert des Trios macht. Denn dort sind sie unschlagbar gut.
