Die dritten Alben einer Band sind oft etwas besonderes und in der Regel ein Indikator, ob die Bands auch in Zukunft relevant bleiben. Franz Ferdinand hat da nicht gerade die günstige Ausgangslage erwischt. Ein (zurecht) sehr erfolgreiches erstes Album und einen Nachfolger, der zwar den FF Stil ein wenig verfeinert hat, aber im großen und ganzen nicht wirklich überzeugen konnte. Dazu eine 3 1/2 jährige Pause, Band interne Streitereien und merkwürdige Ankündigungen, keine Alben sondern nur noch Singles zu veröffentlichen. Naja… und nun liegt doch endlich das aktuelle Album vor.
Mit der Vorab Single Uysses gehts auch gleich los. Eine groovende, betont coole Strophe und ein typischer Ohrwurm Refrain (siehe Youtube Video). Aber trotzdem nicht so ganz der nächste Indie Disco Hit. Woran liegts? Irgendwie fehlt der letzte Drang zum Hit. Das i-Tüpfelchen, dass den Song aus der Masse an bisherigen Franz Ferdinand und Co. Hits herausstehen läßt. Und genau das Problem zieht sich leider durch die ganzen nächsten Songs inkl. Lied zehn: Lucid Dreams. Eben jenes überrascht dann noch mit einem Elektro Acid Outro. Unerwartet? Ja, deswegen gut? Nein. Hier hätte dann die Platte aufhören sollen. Aber stattdessen folgen noch zwei Acoustic Balladen, allenfalls auf B-Seiten Niveau. Idee ganz nett, deswegen gut? Nein.
Schon, klar. Das alles ist Nörgeln auf hohem Niveau und viele andere Bands würden sich die Finger nach den Liedern schlecken. Aber die hohe Messlatte hat sich Franz Ferdinand selbst auferlegt. Und dem Album mangelt es einfach an ein paar genialen Momenten.
Doch genug gemeckert. Freuen wir uns doch einfach an den guten Momenten, etwa den im Band Kontext neu hinzugefügten Elektro Spielereien; Oder der großartigen druckvollen Produktion des Albums, die in Kombination mit den groovenden, basslastigen bzw beatlastigen Liedern das Tanzbein zum Zucken bringt. Das ist Disco im positiven Sinn. Herausragende Beispiele dafür sind What she come for oder auch Bite hard. Auch mag die coole Gesangslinie in Send him away überzeugen.
Zusammengefasst kann festgehalten werden, dass das Album eine ganze Spur besser als You could have it so much better ist. Franz Ferdinand haben jedoch bereits gezeigt, dass sie auch noch eine Liga höher spielen können. Ob die Band in Zukunft relevant bleibt? Das wird sich wohl erst mit Album Nummer vier zeigen. Entscheidung vertagt.
