11 Lieder. 36 Minuten. Brandon O’Brien als Produzent… Die reinen Fakten ließen mich aufhorchen Nachdem die letzten 2-3 Alben meiner Meinung nach zu verkrampft gewesen sind, habe ich einer meiner Lieblingsbands vergangener Tage ein wenig aus den Augen verloren. Ja, es stimmt schon. Auf jeden Album waren gute Lieder drauf, aber es klang so, als wollten Pearl Jam auf Teufel komm raus kompliziert und schwer klingen. Die Leichtigkeit, und Spielfreude vergangener Tage, sind dabei auf der Strecke geblieben.
Egal. Wie ist es noch mit Helden vergangener Tage? Man gibt Ihnen immer wieder gerne eine Chance. Und Pearl Jam machen auf Backspacer fast alles richtig. Wie Kai auf Plattentest vollkommen richtig bemerkt ist die magische Zahl auf diesem Album Drei. Drei Minuten. Genauso lange dauern die meisten Lieder.
Beispielsweise Lied 2: Got some prescht ordentlich nach vorne. Einfachste Lyric trifft auf schnellen Rock N Roll. “Every time you can try but can’t turn on, a rock song. I got some if you need it…” Simpler gehts nicht. Auch wenn das Erfolgsrezept sehr nach Ramones klingt, hört es sich doch immer noch nach 100% Pearl Jam. Und so geht es munter weiter. The Fixer, die Vorabsingle, legt noch einen drauf und bietet schon fast einen munteren Popsong. Das erinnert an das großartige Smile. (No Code Album, wenn ich mich recht erinne).
Ein weiteres Album Highlight drängt sich noch auf. Unthought unknown. Ein mitreißender MidTempo Song. Mit wellenhafter Dynamik steigert sich dieser und bricht somit mit dem sonst üblichen Strophe-Refrain-Strophe Konzept, ohne dabei die Leichtigkeit des restlichen Albums missen zu lassen.
Auch zwei Balladen haben es auf das Album geschafft. Just Breathe und The End. Auch hier sind sie konsequent. Einfach und minimalistisch leben sie doch von einer simplen Melodie, Luft und Eddie Vedders Stimme.
Viele mögen anderer Meinung sein: Pearl Jam hat diese Frischzellenkur bitter nötig gehabt. Und sie klingen so gut wie schon lange nicht mehr.
und NEIN: Es ist kein zweites Alive drauf, und das wird es auch nie geben. Muss es ja auch nicht…
