Nomen est omen. Selten hat eine Band der Bezeichnung “Punk & Roll” derart Rechnung getragen, wie es The Gaslight Anthem mit ihrem zweiten Longplayer tun. Nachdem sie mit dem rauhen “Sink Or Swim” bereits im Jahre 2007 einen ersten Achtungserfolg verzeichnen konnten und nahezu direkt eine Art Interims-EP folgen ließen, legen die Mannen um Frontmann Brian Fallon nun wiederum nach, als sei der Beelzebub höchst persönlich hinter ihnen her. Und schon an dieser Stelle können zwei Dinge festgehalten werden: Zum Einen wurde mit relativ wenig Mitteln viel erreicht. Zum anderen ist Brian Fallon ein Mann der die Frauen, seine Heimat und Bruce Springsteen liebt.
Der Opener “Great Expectations” legt bereits ein mächtiges Tempo vor, kommt schnörkellos zum Refrain und schon wird klar, dass es hier gleich Ohrwürmer hagelt. Hymnenähnlich bohrt sich der Erste in den Gehörgang und ins Gedächtnis des noch leicht überrumpelten Hörers. Mit dem Titeltrack folgt der zweite Streich und macht den sprichwörtlichen Sack dann auch schon zu. Nun hat er Dich, der ’59 Sound, und er läßt Dich nicht mehr fort.
Brian Fallon, Alex Levine, Benny Horowitz und Alex Rosamilia versprühen stets konsequent und durchaus authentisch jede Menge 50er-Jahre-Flair, sei es durch sparsam eingesetzte Soundeffekte (das Anlassen des Motors im überragenden “Old White Lincoln”), dem Anführen diverser 50er-Jahre-Stilikonen oder der Verarbeitung zeitadäquater Inhalte als solche. Brian erzählt uns Geschichten, die das Leben schreibt, ohne sich lang mit rethorischen Feinheiten aufzuhalten. Protagonisten sind Menschen wie Du und ich: Jane, Maria Virginia, Johnny, Grandmama und wie sie noch alle heißen. Schreiben kann Brian Fallon eigentlich immer, über gebrochene Herzen, verlorene Liebe, Hoffnung, Fernweh oder über seine Heimat. “Old White Lincoln”, “Film Noir” und “die großartige Folk-Ballade “Even Cowgirls get The Blues” sind Stücke für die Ewigkeit, die man von nun an durch so manchen Sommer tragen wird. Bei “Here’s Looking At You, Kid” möchte man dann nur noch weinen, vor Glück. Zu bewegend war die Reise, auf die Brian uns mitgenommen hat. Und noch bevor der Hörer in der Lage ist, hastig vom Sofa aufzuspringen und die Repeat-Taste seiner Stereoanlage zu drücken, geht es ein letztes Mal auf den Rücksitz des alten 55er Chevy, wo man glücklicherweise genug Platz hat, tief durchzuatmen, das Erlebte Revue passieren und sich breitbeinig auf das kühle Leder fallen zu lassen. Und denken mag man natürlich nur noch an die Eine (And your sugar and spice, and everything nice. You got Monroe hips, your poison lips and knives. And your sugar and spice, and everything nice, open wounds and a young boy’s pride).
Spannend bleibt wie sooft die Frage, ob der Gaslight Anthem bei dem Tempo nicht schon bald der Sprit ausgeht. Wir drücken die Daumen.
